Our close friend Taylor McClure was in town for 35 Denton…And we put him to work. As we mentioned in our last post we were lucky enough to get two new murals to dress up our shop. Thank you to Spencer of Botany and Western Vinyl for letting us use their music. Keep it real, keep it local.

Here are my findings from SXSW 2013

Best Show: Mac Demarco

This should come as no surprise, a great musician and performer that graciously gives tribute to his influences and predecessors. He’s legit and he’s doing his own thing. i did have the pleasure of buying them all beers, 20 bucks but totally worth it.

Second Best Show: King Tuff

I went to this one solo but by the end I was moshing (and I never mosh) with complete strangers. It was a blast.

Worst Show: The 1975

I was recommended to see them by an English record label scout who seemed to know what he was talking about, but seeing their set told me otherwise. Their appearance suggested something promising, but their first song eliminated that possibility. Plain, uninteresting, almost repulsive teenage pop rock that sounded like it would fit in just great on the radio. Not sure why everyone had their panties in a wad over this one.

Most Trendy: The Allah-Las

Don’t get me wrong, I love this sound/style. Beautiful, warm, tinny, guitars and vocals drowning in reverb. However there’s a huge difference between referencing a style and completely copying it. This band could have arrived on a time machine from the 1960’s with their 1960’s guitars, amps and dress shirts. It’s important that you take what you’ve heard and add SOMETHING to it. Bands who don’t learn that lesson won’t make it past one or two albums.

Best Stumble Upon: Nobunny

Theatrical, high energy, garage punk. I’m always skeptical of lead singers who don’t play an instrument but this guy was so ridiculous in his bunny mask and black underwear that it was great.

Woops! I only caught the last song: Zorch

Sadly I missed most of their set but their last song was amazing. In a half full warehouse in the middle of nowhere way on the east side they played with colored lights shooting everywhere. The two of them sat facing each other, one on drums and other electronics, the other a wall of synthesizers. The drum beats seemed to be slightly jazz inspired which I appreciated after seeing so many trendy bands who seemed to have spontaneously asked their little brother’s girlfriend to fill in because she’s cute and adorable but can’t hit more than one thing at a time. They composed an interesting texture of sound, and it was refreshing to hear something unfamiliar and not a reference to a popular style of the past.

All in all here’s what i saw, with a few other notes:

*Burger records showcase from the parking lot of trailer space because they were enforcing the ridiculously low 40 people capacity.

Homeshake (a side project of Mac Demarco in which he plays the drums, also Walter TV is the side project of his bassist Pierce)

Alt-J (surprisingly lacking energy live)

Welcome back friends. It’s been almost a year. I’ve missed you. Now look at this. It’s a shirt I worked on collaboratively with Thomas Rodgers for the 35 Denton music festival. Oh by the way, I’m working at Pan Ector this semester with some really awesome and talented dudes. Every minute so far has been a blast. I promise we’ll talk again soon.

This session happened to be curated by one of my favorite musicians, Scott McMicken of Dr. Dog. He contributes on vocals, drums, bass and Farfisa.

Throughout the years, adults have attempted in many ways to get children to do things they didn’t want to do. Few solutions have proven so effective and so duplicitous as the following: making a game out of it. This brilliant thinking has produced such wildly entertaining childhood hits as The Silent Game, Here comes the Airplane and FEET MASSAGING CONTESTS! (okay the latter may be limited only to the genius trickery of my father). Nonetheless, this naivety is no longer limited to children!
